When was the Historic Midland Hotel built?

The Historic Midland Hotel was built in 1899, by Mr. Wilke Power. When he built it, Mr. Power intended for hotel to be the most magnificent facility in the Midwest . Unfortunately, just a few short years later in 1902, the hotel was completely destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt soon after into what was considered a "first class" facility, with 27 wonderfully appointed rooms. It has been in operation for most of the time since then. Why do you call the Historic Midland Hotel a boutique hotel?

Every room, public and private, of the Historic Midland Hotel has been completed renovated and restored back to its original glory, complete with tasteful decor and mission style furnishings. Because of the historic nature of this hotel, every one of our 28 rooms affords a different luxury experience. And our staff is committed to ensuring your stay is the ultimate in comfort and convenience.

The Historic Midland Hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places and has won the Kansas Preservation Award for the careful attention given to detail while restoring the facility back to its original state. The trains that once took travelers to the historic hotel are still in operation, with railroad cars passing through this community several times each day--making for an even more memorable experience.

So, will my stay be "rustic"?

Not in the least. All rooms are appointed with 100% luxury cotton sheets, a down comforter, mission style furniture, phone, Cable TV, individual thermostats, and private baths. All rooms are non-smoking. We offer a complimentary continental breakfast each morning, and have an on-property full-service restaurant and tavern.

Every room also offers dataports, to help both business and leisure traveler s stay connected.

Because of its historic nature, every room at the Midland is different in both size and shape. Rooms offer king, queen or full size beds, with each configured differently to provide you with a truly unique historical experience. What's offered in your restaurant, and do you offer alcoholic beverages?

Our restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, offering tasty daily specials. For lunch, we serve an extensive offering of soups, salads and sandwiches, plus a lunch special, which often highlights a Czech or German specialty.

For dinner, our restaurant offers top-of-the-line aged steaks, seafood, and pasta as well as selections famous in the Midwest . Our enormous Chicken Fried Steak is simply scrumptious, and our Fried Chicken took the "Best Fried Chicken Award" from the Kansas Sampler Foundation. Because Wilson is the Czech Capital of Kansas, you'll also find Czech and Bohemian dishes on our menu. We also offer a menu especially for children.

Our bar is open for dinner and offers a full range of alcoholic beverages, and we have an extensive wine list that boasts vintages from around the world drummers

Can you accommodate parties and business meetings?

Yes! We have been the setting for productive staff retreats, board meetings, and community events. And because of how special our historic property is, we have also hosted some of the loveliest weddings and receptions, as well as anniversary parties, birthday parties and other special social occasions. Are children welcome?

Yes! At the Historic Midland Hotel, we love families. We offer adjoining rooms and suites for families, and our restaurant provides a children's menu with child-friendly pricing. There are also plenty of things for families to do in and around the area. Children of all ages particularly enjoy watching the trains pass through town several times each day.

What is there to do in the Wilson area?

Too many things to mention each specifically. Wilson itself is known as the Czech Capital of Kansas, and you'll find our community rich in Czech history and heritage. There are a number of things to do while you're here, including visiting our Czech Opera House as well as several antique and specialty shops located in the center of town.

If you like the outdoors, you'll find Wilson Lake close by, which is an enormous State Park offering a variety of water sports as well as opportunities for hiking, fishing, boating, bird watching, and picnicking. We'll happily provide you and your traveling companions a boxed picnic to take to the lake with you.

For hunting enthusiasts, you'll find this area offers some of the best winter hunting opportunities available, with hunting guides and outfitters ready to make your adventure memorable and productive.

There are also many other tourism attractions in the area including Rolling Hills Zoo, The Garden of Eden, The Grass Roots Arts Center, and Historic Ellsworth and Abilene, Kansas, two towns rich with historic cowboy and pioneer experiences.
